Social Distancing Debrief: Day 5

Holy kapoots! One work week down. What a whirlwind. I’m more adjusted to the work routine, but my prediction about the next couple of days being pivotal is, unfortunately, looking rather accurate. Bleh. We’ll get to that.

WFH in Action

Lots more meetings today and noticing that the spectrum of work attitudes is quite vast still. I’m leaving tons of space for folks to cope with the reality of this situation especially when dealing with kids being home, too. So many variables. The good news is my home office feels like a better thinking space and I’m getting more mental traction. At least as much as the situation allows because WHEW do we have updates.

COVID-19 Latest

Monroe County is up to 36 confirmed cases as of this morning, but the biggest news came from Cuomo: as of 8pm on Sunday, NY state will be shut down aside from essential businesses in an effort to stop the spread. While Monroe County might not look like an exponential risk, here’s something to consider: NY tallied around 4,400 confirmed cases early Friday and then 5,700 by 6pm. The threat is real and NYC’s Health Commissioner, Oxiris Barbot, is quoted saying, “I wouldn’t be surprised if we get to a day when we have double-digits new people dying every day.” Whew.

I opted to go to Wegman’s once more over lunch to catch some more items now that we’re more likely to face a “shelter in place” mandate like California. The store is still wiped out, but at least you can see folks being a bit more mindful of the two-item limits. Just don’t try to get any chicken, toilet paper, or soaps? Good times.

Mike’s company is responding to the mandate, which means he and I will be working from home together next week. That’s going to be interesting. We keep joking that we’re going to be terrible coworkers and I think we’re correct LOL. Let’s hope we figure out how to make it work.

Lessons and Predictions

The big takeaway today was how nobody is safe from the impact of this global table flip. I’m seeing top names in the tech industry being forced to find new jobs just as I’m watching local companies shutter over the uncertainty of the next month. Per my usual Twitter curiosities, I threw down another poll:

As of 172 votes late tonight (Friday), the results are almost balanced. So folks are all across the board. I have no doubt the gray will start to reduce over this next week. We’re just getting started.

My prediction of some pivotal moments hitting these next two days stands especially as we’re ramping up into a Sunday deadline. I’m just hoping the mandates are more intense than the reality of the cases and numbers. I’d LOVE to look back on this and know we did what we could to keep people safe and avoid the inundation of severely sick folks. Our system simply cannot handle the potential.

Snarky posts time!

Time to go *finally* play some Animal Crossing after neglecting it for a full 24 hours. I’m impressed with my refusal skills and also a bit nervous about who I’ve become in this weird time haha so not like me.

Thinking I’ll stick to weekend updates as a whole instead of day-by-day so here’s to the next 48 hours being a bit of a reprieve. We need it.

I probably just jinxed all of that now that I put it that way. WELP here we go.
