Social Distancing Debrief: Day 9

…What day is it?

SERIOUSLY, though. I had to start this post by renaming the previous post, as I screwed up the count due to having ZERO CLUE what day it is. ONLY TO REALIZE I HAD IT RIGHT. Fawk. I’m so lost.

Doesn’t matter. Let’s get to it.

WFH in Action

Another Tuesday — errrrr Monday? — NO, IT’S TUESDAY at home and my husband and I haven’t snapped at each other. Pretty sure our system works and we’ll continue to live with our makeshift office setups. I have this to offer, though. Fair warning: awkward-as-hell dance captured in a reply because I should have figured a “what’s the dance tho?” request was inevitable:

Finally feeling like I’m getting into a mental flow, too, but thinking most of that is due to adapting. Definitely sensing a reduced churn and increase of flow, which is super helpful. So nice having my feet under me again!

COVID-19 Latest

So here’s where the floor immediately falls out from under us again. NYC is now considered the epicenter of this pandemic and Monroe County is up to 106 (up from 80 yesterday) confirmed cases with a total of 3 deaths. All of this after a mandate rolled out earlier this evening calling for self isolation if anyone has been in NYC the past two weeks. This is fine. Everything is fine.

Narrator: “It was not fine.”

Curious to see how the data as the testing continues. Governor Cuomo a.k.a. King of the Press Conference mentioned that we’re maxing out all our resources outside of the federal options and continues to push Trump to push the button. As he put it earlier today, “Volunteerism is nice. It is a beautiful thing. […] That is not going to get us there, and I do not for the life of me understand the reluctance to use the Defense Production Act.” I agree with him. We know we’re forecasting the need for over 30K ventilators but FEMA just approved 400 to be sent to NYC. Hmm. Not quite adding up. Cuomo is also super refreshing in how he refers to the most vulnerable and how we need to prioritize the places hit the hardest, which is NYC at the moment. Once we solve for NYC, we can send the help and resources elsewhere (likely California, Washington, Jersey at this rate). The Trump and federal-level saga continues, I guess.

Still waiting on that “shelter in place” mandate. I’m rather impressed it’s not here in NY yet given our levels. Welp.

Lessons and Predictions

Every day is a new chance to see how incompetent our president is. Let’s recap:

A compilation of all the times Trump downplayed COVID-19 over the past months.

As of today, he’s setting flat deadlines and telling this damn virus to be outta here by Easter. WHEW. I’m sure it’s comply. It’s a Christian event after all! C’mon, COVID-19. Our CLEARLY Christ-like leader must enjoy the resurrection of his inspiration.

HEAVY SIGH.

So yeah. That’s a thing. Meanwhile, Cuomo (honestly, he’s more presidential in my mind so I’m sticking with him for the duration) is updating us that the apex of this ordeal is 14-21 days away. Riiiiiiiight about when Easter lands.

I don’t like bets, but I do appreciate predictions and something tells me Cuomo is using more facts, data, and science to inform his statements so I’m going to go ahead and lean into his timelines. I’m clinging to my recently-updated prediction that this week will be rocky, but perhaps the tippy top of this tidal wave is still a ways off. Oy.

HARD PIVOT.

I’m distracting myself by diving into conversations about how many jobs have forever shifted in favor of remote opportunities. Hell, I woke up earlier today to “help” my mom conduct her pilates class via Zoom. I’m quoting help there because she’s got it down! It was fun to witness and made me hopeful about these technologies as well as the misconception that people won’t adapt. Push came to shove, huh.

Also watching the evening news and seeing the meteorologists doing their reports from their home offices, dance studios doing remote classes with kiddos*, and the quick adjustment all around for companies that otherwise wrote off WFH. Change can hit fast and hard when we push for it!

Best of luck to the leaders trying to convince that in-office is the ideal state after a potential month of proving how viable it is, by the way!

Narrator: “She says, smugly reflecting on her work presentation that emphasized the importance of WFH policies.”

Yup. I’m already imagining the fuel stipend requests or raises due to reducing office overhead. SO MUCH POTENTIAL! I’ll wait to see the reality in which we weaponize this ordeal with lines like “WFH!? Hah! You remember COVID-19, don’t you?!” A woman can dream.

Okay, I’m fried. Donezo. Onward to Tuesday! Er, Wednsday! A DAY WHO THE HELL CARES!

*STRONG CONCERNS about privacy and coverage for kids on the internet in these cases, but isn’t that just tech as usual? Woof. We certainly didn’t solve tech ethics before this pandemic hit so hooray for tons of hills to die on!

Oh, here’s my fav video mashup right now. Less snark, more laughs. Also, this kid is my inner dialogue whenever I’m near a dog. Kbye!
